In response to growing concerns of the health of our youth, the Good to Grow initiate was developed by the trained education staff at Powell Gardens. It is a plant science and health & nutrition experience for grades 3 through 5. Students become gardeners in Fun Foods Farm, are physically active over 60-minutes during the experience and help prepare and enjoy a fresh garden snack, all while learning about making healthy choices concerning food and physical activity.
Good to Grow Overview
Students in grades 3 through 5 learn about photosynthesis and pollination. They weed, feed and help us seed Fun Foods Farm. (Garden activites are seasonal.) They learn about the benefits of green exercise while walking the Heartland Harvest Garden. Plus, they reap the benefits from the garden by helping to create a healthy garden snack. They participate in three learning modules each of which are tied to Missouri state Science and Health Education Grade Level Expectations.
Science Strand GLEs: 3.1.A.a, 3.1.B.a, 3.1.D.a, 3.3.D.a
Health Education GLEs: 1.1.E, 2.1.A, 2.2.A, 2.2B, 2.2.C, 5.1.A
