Nature Connects: LEGO Brick Sculptures
June 1-September 29, 2013
Walk by an 8-foot tall hummingbird, admire a 7-foot rose, go nose-to-nose with a 5-foot butterfly and watch an oversized LEGO® koi leap from the pools of the Island Garden.
Inspired by nature and built from nearly half-a-million LEGO® pieces, this summer exhibit features 27 larger-than-life sculptures that represent the complex and amazing network that interconnects all living things on Earth.
Ranging in size from 6 inches to nearly 8 feet, a variety of creatures are represented in the exhibit, including a tiger swallowtail butterfly, a green darner dragonfly, a hummingbird and even a gardener. The largest sculpture is a mother bison made from 45,143 bricks.
About the Artist
Sean Kenney spent so much time playing with LEGO toys as a child that he decided he might as well make a career of it. For nearly a decade, Sean has been turning ordinary LEGO bricks into spectacular works of art.
Based in New York City, Sean was the first of now only 13 LEGO Certified Professionals worldwide. His work has been featured in major media from The New York Times to BBC News. A self-described "professional kid," Sean uses LEGO bricks to create things that connect to the larger world. He hopes that after seeing his sculptures, children will become inspired to create great things themselves.
Sean also is the author of a series of best-selling picture book building guides for children, including "Cool Cars and Trucks," "Cool City" and "Cool Robots."
Nature Connects is open during regular Garden hours and will include educational activities and special performances, such as a hands-on LEGO® brick building station, LEGO® design competitions, storytelling, discovery stations that explore how animals build in nature, live performances by Dino O’Dell and Paul Mesner Puppets and more.
Entrance to Nature Connects is included in Garden admission. Festival admission applies during Booms & Blooms on Wednesday, July 3, and the Festival of Butterflies, August 2-4 and August 9-11.
