Kids who love nature and the great outdoors are in for a treat when the Kids' Club kicks off its new season this spring.
The club, designed for children ages 5 to 12, will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. on the second Saturdays of May through October.
For the 2010 season, the club will divide into two groups during each meeting to make it easier for all to participate
and we'll start the Kids' Club Garden Plot--a special space for club members to plant and then observe throughout the growing season! Renew or join now so you won't miss any of these sessions:
Learn why plants are so important to Planet Earth's well being and use recycled goods to make a project you can put to work in your own garden.
Work together to plant an assortment of edibles, flowers and herbs in the brand new Kids' Club Garden Plot. We'll watch this garden grow throughout the season by starting each of our monthly meetings in this area. Each member also will receive a packet of seeds to start at home.
Back by popular demand! Join a guided hike on the Byron Shutz Trail and explore flora and fauna in a natural prairie setting.
Explore the thriving underwater world as we dip into the pond and examine what we find. All members are invited to bring their swim gear and stay afterward for a splash session in the Fountain Garden.
Help us release native butterflies, then stay for a program by local moth and butterfly experts. Each member also will receive a free set of butterflywings to decorate after the meeting.
Bugs are everywhere in the garden (along with their oversized counterparts in the Big Bugs exhibit). This month, we'll form a team of bug hunters as we learn about the often-overlooked garden heroes such as spiders, insects and frogs.
Learn about the history of these traditional garden guardians and then break into small groups to make a collection of Kids' Clubs scarecrows to be displayed at the Gardens.
The cost is $15/year for members and $30/year for non-members. Parents should plan to accompany children ages 7 and under. New members will receive a T-shirt, membership card and pin. Renewing members will receive a Kids' Club water bottle and updated membership card. For more information, call 816-697-2600 x307.
