The Missouri Barn was designed by architect Maurice Jennings as a contemporary and organic play off local barns—the icons of our Midwestern landscape.
The barn’s silo is an observation deck (accessible by elevator or an easy spiral staircase) where you can look out over the garden and see its beautiful patchwork quilt designs.
The barn offers a shady respite where you can sit and relax, have a snack at reFresh (open seasonally), attend a multi-course Barn Dinner, or watch a cooking demonstration at the KCP&L outdoor cooktop. The trolley service picks up behind the barn and returns to the Visitor Education Center and other Gardens.
Pecans to Nut Pines
Behind the barn lies parking for special events. Even here the landscape is edible, with a pecan orchard planted to one day shade parked cars. Several pines with edible pine nuts are used as evergreen screens and windbreaks.
Borders of herbs beside long walkways, a mini-vegetable patch enclosed by a wattle fence and diverse dwarf fruit trees create the Kitchen Garden just south of the barn.
Herbs are displayed like perennials in long garden borders, each with its own theme. Look for Tapestry of Thyme, Vibrant Colors, Pastel Harmonies and Silver & Gold for ideas you can try at home.
The fruit trees include peaches, pears, apples, plums, cherries and even an impenetrable row of hardy oranges. Like a true kitchen garden, this space makes it easy for chefs to quickly harvest something directly for their cooking demonstrations right next door.
