Senior Gardener — Floral Gardens

This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position working in the Perennial Garden at Powell Gardens and requires some weekend and holiday work.  Responsibilities include: 1) maintenance of the 4-acre perennial garden including weeding, watering, deadheading, grooming, and pest control of all plants as well as maintaining the hardscape; 2) regularly coordinating with the other Senior Gardeners in the Woodland & Stream and Island Gardens to assist with maintenance of these “core” gardens; 3) plant, divide and edit perennial garden beds to meet each bed’s planting theme; 4) be a team player and be able to assist other Powell Gardens staff and participate in garden events as needed.  All work shall be in accordance with Powell Gardens’ high quality standards of horticultural excellence.  The position shall oversee volunteers (and potential interns), maintain detailed plant records and label all plants.  Qualifications include 2 years of nursery or garden/landscape maintenance work, with a horticulture degree preferred.  The successful candidate must have an outstanding understanding of perennial plants, their cultivation and maintenance -- including their nomenclature.  An attractive benefit package is included with this position (following and eligibility period) including: PTO, holiday and vacation time plus medical, dental, disability and retirement plans. Gardener — Heartland Harvest Garden

This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position working in the Heartland Harvest Garden, and requires rotational weekend and holiday work. Responsibilities include assisting the Horticulturist with development and maintenance of the Heartland Harvest Garden's seasonal plantings and collections in a manner in accordance with Powell Gardens' high quality standards. The successful candidate must be a team player with experience and proficiency with edible plants; experience with vegetable gardening, berries, fruit and nut trees is essential. Candidates with degrees in horticulture or relating to edible plants are preferred. This position shall also include overseeing volunteers and assisting with recordkeeping. Gardener– Greenhouses

This is a seasonal, full-time, non-exempt position working from February through October in the Greenhouse Complex and requires weekend and holiday work.  Responsibilities include assisting the Production Horticulturist with a wide array of greenhouse production and maintenance activities.  The bulk of the work will be the growing of seasonal horticultural crops in a manner in accordance with Powell Gardens high quality standards.  The position shall also include working with volunteers and help with record keeping and labeling.  Pay shall be $9.00 per hour with prorated benefits of holiday, vacation and paid time off (PTO) earned.  The position may begin as soon as soon as possible.

Be a team member in maintenance of this largest edible landscape in the United States.  Gardening experience beneficial but a willingness to work in accordance with Powell Gardens high quality maintenance standards is mandatory.  Starting pay shall be $9.00 per hour plus benefits that include prorated holiday, vacation and PTO (personal time off) pay that shall begin to accrue after a wait period based on a candidate’s start date.  The positions may begin as soon as available depending on weather conditions.

Maintenance and Facilities

Maintenance Assistant

This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position responsible for performing necessary repairs and maintenance for the entire Powell Gardens campus - including buildings, structures and ground areas, as well as providing maintenance support for special events. Responsibilities include maintaining safe work areas for employees and the public at all times, keeping tools clean and in good working order, perfoming general maintenance and construction duties as needed and complying with Powell Gardens policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of carpentry, plumbing and concrete practices. Will be able to lift 80 lbs. and accomplish strenuous work on an ongoing basis in various weather conditions. Must be able to perform simple math, read a tape measure and communicate effectively with the public and coworkers. Applicant must also be able to work in high places and tight areas. Applicant must have a flexible schedule and valid driver's license to be considered. Seasonal Bartenders

We are currently seeking experienced, personable bartenders to work special events and receptions on an as-needed basis. The ideal candidate is highly organized, able to multi-task and able to perform basic math. Professional appearance and exemplary verbal communication skills are a must. Bartenders will be responsible for set-up, maintenance and operation of the bar during the scheduled shift. This position requires lifting and extended periods of walking and standing.

Horticulture Internships

Horticulture Internships (paid)

Currently available are two internships at Powell Gardens and an internship at the Kauffman Memorial Garden in Midtown Kansas City. All internships shall last 12 weeks from May to August. Compensation is $8.00/hour, 40 hours/week. Our internship programs comprise hands-on work experiences with gardeners and an opportunity to learn what it takes to maintain a public garden. Kauffman Memorial Garden Internship (Midtown Kansas City)

Horticulture Internships (unpaid) 

Program comprises hands-on work experiences with gardeners focusing on what it takes to maintain a major public botanical garden (Intern housing is available no cost at Powell Gardens). Internships should last at least 12 weeks from May to August or to fit a student's class schedule as approved by the Director of Horticulture. Weekend work may be available. Internship opportunities include the 3 core gardens: 1) Perennial Garden, 2) Woodland and Stream Garden-Meadow-Chapel and 3) Island Garden, 4) Visitor Center annual display beds & conservatory 5) turf and trails (mainly mowing), 6) nursery and plant trials, and up to 2 opportunities in the 7-8) Heartland Harvest Garden: America's largest edible landscape.
